Without doubt the greatest challenge for a furniture designer is to create a comfortable, attractive form of seating. These responses to the problem all take comfort as being a priority appropriate to their function, whether this is fully upholstered or hard. |

Post-n-Rail
Inspired by farm gates seen on a walk through the Coromandel peninsula. Leg Posts made
from Kauri with Rimu rails, Foam cushions wrapped with heavy Dacron and
removable fabric covers. |

Mr Pumpkin
Whilst working at Coloroll I
was asked to design a sofa for a friend whose requirements were for a
place to curl up in luxury and comfort and also a place to have a
party. The huge arms are perfect for sitting on and it offers a wide
range of relaxation positions. |

Aronsdak
Inspired by the
traditional arondak/cape cod chair. low and casual, very comfortable for
outdoor use. made in solid timber and stainless steel laquered to suit
or left natural to weather

Annies Rocker
Designed for my
wife Anne as a comfortable seat in which to nurse our two boys. The
design has since evolved into a personal challenge to design a supremely
comfortable chair. The seat and rockers are all laminated and the
support is coloured webbing.

Jakobs Ladderback
Inspired by
traditional ladder-back chairs. Made in Cherry and sycamore. These are a
highly crafted chair with hand carved sculpted seats, ebony wedged peg
detail and dovetailed joint to the back legs.

Botanicals Bench
Designed by Neal Smith,
The bench was designed for the new visitors center at the Auckland
Botanical Gardens. Its form reflects both the architecture and expresses
something of the fluidity inherent in natural forms. The original was
made in bleached and limed pine with a cast steel under frame. |

Bush Chair
Designed in response to a
request from a local gallery and a desire to explore more the visual
inspiration of New Zealand's unique landscape and natural flora
and fauna. The chair seats and legs are sculpted in a similar tradition
to Windsor chair seats and the back legs are laminated from tapered
strips of Rimu. The finished result is a seat and back designed for
comfort and presence. |

Ferns Stool
A simple looking Bar stool
designed to reflect the extensive canopy of the fern trees. The turned
support and seat has been carved in the tradition of the Windsor chair "bottomers"
this has been mounted in a solid turned plywood base. |

African Chairs
My brother in law arrived back from 4 years VSO work in Sudan he brought back version
of these chairs carved with elephants. The chair had a very comfortable
ergonomic position dispite looking quite severe and were so simple I
made my own version. They are perfect for a tiny flat as
they can be taken apart when not used and stored. These are Oak with
decorative carved texture and shellac finish.

Kids furniture
Both the cot and rocking
weta were designed for my sons Oliver and Henry with out doubt my
greatest creation. |
